Access to liquid cash is a critical part of any Financial and Investment Plan. We encourage the use of a Money Market Fund to hold cash set aside for liquidity. Such funds are available that pay competitive interest rates. This is an excellent place for farm sale clients to direct the deposit of their farm sale proceeds.
Looking after tomorrow's cash flow is of little relevance if you can't afford to live today. You might consider a system using "laddered" GICs to guarantee cash flow needs for at least five years. The cash required for Year 1 could be held in a money market fund with monthly transfers to your chequing account. An equal amount is held in four separate GICs with maturities spanning four years. As the first year is used up, a GIC will mature to provide the funds needed for the next year. The "growth" part of your portfolio can be examined to find the money to add a new GIC each year.
